‘Agnotology’ is a term coined by Robert N. Proctor (1995), from the Greek prefix ‘a-‘ for ‘without’ and term ‘gnosis’ for ‘knowing’ or ‘knowledge’. He offers an extensive account of the concept in Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance (2008), which he co-edited with Londa Schiebinger.
